He made a home museum. You can do it, too. I will show you how.

How To Create Your Own Home Museum Displays
First: materials.
I asked Tynan what materials he used, the format and fonts for his museum placard template, the mounting process, and how he picked the layout.
Custom Description Placards
Tynan used 140lb ivory index stock.
He noted that once he stops changing little things on the placards or labels, he’ll have a print shop print them on thicker card stock and cut them properly.
PRO TIPS ON PRINTING + MOUNTING
Print the museum placard descriptions on gloss or luster paper. Then mount to mat paper or foam board so that it’s as thick as you prefer.
To mount them, he used loops of tape because he kept moving them. Tynan’s Note: I will need a better solution once I get permanent labels.
ACTUAL MUSEUM PRO TIPS

“On a very low budget, print your labels at a Kinkos (or other print place) on a 64 gloss or luster paper. Then either have them mounted on foam core or mount them yourselves. Then cut them out with an exact or box cutter using a new blade (after mounting, so that the foam and paper are the exact same size).”
“When it comes to mounting the labels to the wall, we use a combination of blue painters tape and double sided foam mounting tape to 1. protect the surface of the wall, and 2. be strong enough to hold up thicker paper/foamcore/mat board. I think it looks nice because the thickness of the tape sets the label off of the wall just a bit and makes it look like the label is floating.
Museum Placards: Font Selection
Most museums have very specific guidelines for text labels on the museum placards.
The National Park Service never uses fonts smaller than 24 points in their exhibits.
The Milwaukee Art Museum always uses the Weiss Antiqua font.
He likes it because it’s serious and readable, but was a more friendly than most museum fonts.
PRO TIPS ON FONTS
High contrast between text and background is critical. Most museum labels are black text on a white background.

Museum Placard Labels: Layout and Template
Tynan looked at a lot of different labels online before coming up with his own format.
He assumed there was a standard format, but he found that there was a lot of variation.
Q: How did you lay them out?
“I made the cards in HTML so that I could easily edit them and modify the styles for all of them at the same time. Probably something like LaTeX is better, but HTML was really quick and flexible.”
Nick’s note: You could also make your labels in Google Docs, Microsoft Word, etc. Research labels you love and combine elements of them (sizes, order, bolding, etc.) to make one that feels right in your space. You might also be interested to know that I once threw a private party for my 36th birthday at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC.
Plexiglass Cases
There isn’t one universal standard for display cases.
Depending on artifact type, museum environment, lighting and a number of other factors, museums usually choose between museum quality glass or acrylic.
For Tynan, these were the hardest items to find. There are a lot of similar boxes for sale, but they’re all meant to be placed on a flat table, not mounted to the wall.
Apartments and houses may not have the best lighting to highlight your art.
Tynan used a big LED lighting track and a couple of light heads to aim at the pieces.
He noted: “I would prefer to have a more focused beam, but haven’t found better light heads yet.”

Lighting is tricky. There isn’t one best way to go about it.
PRO TIPS ON LIGHTING

Custom Wall Mounting
Finding the right kind of wall mounts for custom pieces, especially artifacts, can be tricky.
Tynan used standard wall plate hangers for both the celadon bowl, above, and the Cederquist piece. He had to rebend the wire in both cases.

Interview with the Collector: The Idea Behind Tynan’s Home Museum
Q: What was your goal in showing off your art like this?
“I am really excited about every piece I have in my collection, but when they’re just sitting on the wall without context I don’t think that enthusiasm is easily transmitted. Most people who live in small unassuming apartments like mine don’t have museum quality art, so I thought that by putting it in a museum context I could get people interested in the art.”
Q: What advice would you have for someone else who wants to do similar?
“I haven’t had many guests over since doing it, so I’m not sure what the reception will be. I think it may seem pretentious to some people, but hopefully, most will think it’s cool to have a mini-museum experience. I’ve found that I look at my art more since making them, maybe because the chats (labels) trigger some Pavlovian museum reflex. The most interesting tip I learned when doing research was to make the chat draw the reader back to the piece, so I rewrote some of them to mention specific elements of the pieces.”
Q: Has the museum-like setup you made started conversations with friends and guests?
“Yes, although maybe not as many as I expected it would. I made the object descriptions so that people could relate to the pieces, but most people don’t read them. The people who do get into it seem to be most excited about how old some of the pieces are.”
Q: How would you “hack” your own mini-museum?
A: I actually have little stories about every piece so that I can give people tours if they ask about it. All of the works are things that I find extremely interesting, so I like teaching people about them.
Q: Have you noticed a difference from when you had the artwork normally organized in the space?
A: Yes, definitely. The biggest difference is that even though I built it, I treat it like a museum and I walk through most days and even read the little chats I wrote. Each of the pieces is something I would go out of my way to see in a museum, so it’s like a small slice of the most interesting museum for me.
Q: Which is your favorite piece?
A: It changes, but right now my favorite is this tea bowl made by Eiraku Hozen in the early 1800s. He was one of the “three great potters” of Kyoto, and his works are in all of the biggest museums, like the Met. This particular piece is special because it is stamped with a golden seal given to him by the lord of his prefecture and was only used on his best works. It also has a crane motif done in a Korean inlay style, which can also be seen in a 13th-century celadon bowl I have and was an homage to a very famous tea bowl from 1603. Sometimes I drink tea out of it because I’ve always wanted to do that when I see pieces like this in museums.
Q: If you could add any piece of art to your own collection what would it be?
A: The unrealistic answer is that I would like a Vermeer. I go all around the world to see all of them, and only have five I haven’t seen yet. More realistically, I’d really love a Russian malachite vase. They take small pieces of malachite and arrange them in a mosaic such that the natural patterns of the stone line up and it looks like the vase was made of one solid piece.
Q: What got you into art?
A: It was actually an early Museum Hackprivate tour in New York City with you. Our mutual friend Ronen invited me. Before that, I would occasionally go to museums but didn’t really know what to do once I got there and didn’t feel like I related to any of the pieces.

Baskerville is also the Museum's official serif font in designed work. The majority of designed work uses the Museum's official sans serif font, Akzidenz Grotesk. In contrast to Baskerville, it adds a contemporary and modern feel representative of the Museum's current activities and profile in the world.
Your art labels should include your name, object title, and media/support/technique—at a minimum. A retrospective of your work should also include the dates. In a one-person exhibition, your name need not be as prominent on labels and you might, instead, make the title larger and put it before your name.
A well-worded label meets the visitor in familiar territory, using concepts and terminology that feel like second nature, before revealing a new, and relevant, perspective.
They discussed exhibition making models suitable for diverse types of museums and suggested five stages of the exhibit design process: (a) idea generation; (b) concept development; (c) design development; (d) production, fabrication, and installation; and (e) post-opening activities.
Starting a museum is very expensive, as a rule of thumb, the exhibition space is half of the overall space, a 4500 exhibition space becomes a 9000 square ft building at $200 per square foot of new construction is $1.8 million dollars, plus approximately, $150 to fit out the gallery spaces, $675,000, total $2,475,000 in ...
There are four key areas of revenue—earned revenue, endowment income, contributions and fundraising, and government support—on which museums draw for their budget.
And so selfie museums are profitable when they are able to attract a large number of customers on a regular basis throughout the year. A selfie museum that is seasonal will have a hard time making ends meet. This can be a problem in seasonal touristic locations.
The absolute minimum type size for exhibit labels or graphics is 18 point (one point, the traditional measure of type sizes, is 1/72 of an inch). If at all possible use a larger size than this, say 24 point, for body text with still larger sizes, say 36 point, for headlines.
The minimum type size for art gallery labels is 18 points. If you can, use a larger size font such as 22-26 points, for body text with still larger sizes, and 36 points for headings. Write one sentence per line and ensure the characters are nicely spaced so they are easier to read.
The standard is to sign the print at the bottom right hand corner below the impression, the edition number on the bottom left hand corner and the title, if any, in the center.
Some of the most common techniques are inside a display case, on a platform, on a mannequin, on a wall, or in a diorama. Ask students to describe each display technique, and the type of artifact you would display.
Labels should contain no more than 120 words. Some works in an exhibition may have labels that contain only the tombstone information—the most basic details about the work of art (artist's name, title, date, medium, etc.).

They want to experience new things. They want to be wowed! Design emotionally engaging experiences that will wow your guests. Stimulate their senses, or simply encourage interaction with your exhibit using technology and innovative design.
In this article, museums are classified into five basic types—general, natural history and natural science, science and technology, history, and art. A more recent kind of museum—the virtual museum—transcends all other types by virtue of its unique electronic presentation and is discussed as well.
Museums display things: art, artifact, specimens. They do this, mostly, in the service of teaching facts, revealing ideas, or driving emotion or empathy. Things help museums tell stories.
As nonprofit organizations, art museums are exempt from federal income tax in the United States. This exemption does not mean that tax rules have no effect on museums, however. Far from it. The various tax instruments affect art museums indirectly but dramatically.
Museums have long understood their educational and cultural value, but only recently have they begun to realize the economic impact on their communities. Not only educational and entertaining, museums are big business.
In the nonprofit world of museums, there are three main categories of revenue: Contributions, or fundraising, which typically counts for over half of a museums' revenue at an industry standard of around 60%. Program services, such as admissions, is not insignificant, but is proportionally small.
Museums generate income from a range of sources including core funding, grants, trading, contracts, fundraising, membership schemes, admission fees, corporate sponsorship and investment income.
Museums have a valuable role in preserving and transmitting a nation's history and heritage to new generations. Free access will encourage more people to find out about their country and help to promote feelings of national unity and identity, while promoting greater understanding and acceptance of foreign cultures.
The price for a selfie station ranges widely. You could spend more than $20,000 on a massive selfie museum with handheld props, or as little as $5,000 on a smaller single selfie station. If you are going with oversized props, models or 3D printed items, you will likely be paying a premium.

Often galleries and museums will use vinyl to display an artist's name and / or the title of the show near the entryway. Next time you visit an institution, have a look. Custom-cut vinyl lettering is easily removable and will not damage walls.

Artists typically now number their prints so that collectors will know that this print edition is limited and that their print is part of the official edition. The numbering of a print does not in itself make that print any more or less valuable, but it does give collectors some important facts about the print.
Most emerging artists tend to choose a number between 200-500. This way, your limited editions run is not too small to hamper sales and just big enough to interest and satisfy your buyers. Ideally, the number for a large limited edition run should not exceed 850.
Signed in pencil is usually the type of signature that collectors prefer. It has become a tradition for the artist to sign their name in the lower margin under the image. They may also include the edition number, title and date.
