There's perhaps no meat on a stick more famous than the gyro. A Chicago favorite, you can find the meat roasting on a spit at nearly every Greek and Mediterranean restaurant in town. Some places still serve homemade gyros while others offer different variations such as chicken gyros. We've listed the best spots in Eater Chicago's Gyros Map so you can get your fill however you like it.

A Chicago mainstay for decades, the award-winning gyros here are a combination of beef and lamb and served with thick-cut fries. If you’re looking for something a little different from the traditional meat, they also offer chicken gyros as well.
Few options are better for gyros than going straight to the source—Greektown. The Parthenon claims to have brought gyros to Chicago and to this day still makes its own meat in-house. Whether it’s the inventor or not, the combination of ground beef and lamb over onions and a side of tzatziki sauce is good enough to make it not matter.
The popular Lincoln Park Greek eatery is always a good choice for Mediterranean fare and of course, gyros. The classic lamb and beef gyros can be customized with cheese and ordered as a sandwich, dinner plate or in a salad. And on a nice summer’s day, there’s also the option to dine al fresco.

It’s not a Greek restaurant nor is it the typical gyro, but Publican Quality Meats’ take on the sandwich is just as good if not better. The “Return of the Gyro” is a delicious combination of braised pork belly instead of beef or lamb, raita (in place of tzatziki), escalivada, pea shoots and Calabrian chili vinaigrette on griddled flatbread. One bite and you’ll wish other gyros could be this good.
A north suburban favorite, The Works has been slicing up gyros since the 70s and built up a loyal following. Rich and flavorful, the gyros are a huge hit with locals as well as Chicagoans who aren’t afraid to make the trek up for a taste.
The inspiration behind a Saturday Night Live sketch, Hub’s was made famous by a scene extolling “da juice” of its gyros. Decades later, the old-school Skokie restaurant is still one of the best spots to go for a gyro. And as you might expect, they’re as juicy as they come served on fluffy pita bread.

In a hurry and need gyros on-the-go? Niko’s has a drive-thru suited for those who’d rather stay in the comforts of their car. The menu offers regular gyros as well as the chicken variety, and if you drop by on the weekends you can grab it as a special for less than $3.

West siders swear by Nick’s Drive-In and keep coming back for more. It might not look like much on the outside but it’s one of the few places in the city still making homemade gyros. And in the age of meat on a spit, that’s got to count for something.

One of the best gyro in Chicago is made in a classy restaurant, in Wicker Park, and is made of duck. Pomegranite-glazed meat is wrapped in crispy Pontian bread and served over a bed of yogurt mint sauce. It's a can't-miss.
